Abstract

More than 400 original articles have been published from 2007 onwards evaluating therapeutic potential of molecular hydrogen (H2), the youngest member of medical gases family with selective anti-oxidative properties. However, recent studies suggest that H2 may tackle other mitochondrial processes besides oxidative stress, including metabolic pathways that drive cellular energy.

Findings
The article proposes that molecular hydrogen (H2) may modulate mitochondrial bioenergetics through several mechanisms, including ghrelin-mediated upregulation of GHS-R1α, activation of GLUT1 and GLUT4, and increased expression of FGF21. These pathways could explain energy-boosting effects of H2 beyond its antioxidant properties, potentially benefiting disorders with mitochondrial dysfunction.
